Amazing things

Yesterday was my first day at Primary Children's. Well, the first day I actually got paid for taking care of patients. It was a really good day. I took care of the cutest little girls. I had a great discussion with some parents about "defects" that kids are born with. There are some people who think that automatic abortion should occur with certain types of defects. The trouble with this school of thought is that you don't ever know how the kids will turn out until they are born and get a chance to live. Who is to say that children with disabilities can't have good lives? It was really interesting to talk to this family. They understand things on a whole different level than most. Life isn't about what you have, it is about how you live. I am glad that this mom and dad were aware enough to not choose to have an abortion. I suppose there are cases where an abortion is a good idea, but those cases are few and far between. Really far between. I learned a little more about love yesterday. I only wish I could tell you the whole story. It really is quite miraculous. However, HIPAA is a good thing, and it is one of the things that rules my career.

Hypothetical question... would you have infants awaiting heart transplants, would they be on your unit?

That didn't make sense. I should proof-read. What I meant was "if there were infants awaiting heart transplants at Primary's, would they be on your unit?"

Ok, I've read it thrice now. Ready to post.

Yes, we would get an infant waiting for a heart. However, that kid may also go to Children's Surgical, because that is where they have the telemetry monitors and such. Essentially it depends on staffing and doctor preference and available beds. The kid would go to the Immunocompromised Unit if they had cancer or some other immuno-suppressing disease. It gets complicated. That was probably too much information. That is what happens when you suppose.
